A Gemstone-Inspired Transformation: Sustainable Design Meets Functional Elegance

The GRS office building in Silom, home to a Swiss gemstone certification company, underwent a total refurbishment across its six stories. The lower floors house public areas, including large meeting rooms, an entrance hall, a waiting area, and customer counters. Offices and gemstone laboratories occupy the upper floors, while a staff canteen with a rooftop terrace crowns the building. A notable feature is the over 100 sqm solar photovoltaic roof, which generates the majority of the building’s electricity.

To optimize the work environment for gemstone labs, which require minimal daylight, an origami-inspired façade of folded and perforated aluminum panels was added. These panels resemble the faceted cuts of gemstones, allowing air and limited light to pass while significantly reducing sun exposure. This design not only enhances the laboratories’ functionality but also makes a bold architectural statement. The PV roof structure continues the façade’s design with diagonal columns supporting the roof, creating a cohesive and striking visual effect.
