Transforming a Townhouse into a Unique and Versatile Living Space
The Ruean Thai project transforms a traditional 300 sqm townhouse into a modern family home with an individualized design. This renovation reimagines the original layout, combining contemporary aesthetics with functional living spaces across four floors.
1st Floor: A Grand Welcome
The front entrance accommodates a car park beside an open courtyard featuring a serene water fountain. A nearly 3-meter-tall wooden door opens to reveal the entrance area and an office space. The interior boasts a tall exposed concrete ceiling, a seamless white terrazzo floor, and a lush green garden, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. Expanded stair steps provide a cozy seating area to relax and enjoy the garden view.
2nd Floor: Culinary and Social Hub
The second floor centers around a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area. The kitchen features a large island, while the dining space includes a comfortable sofa for casual gatherings. Both the dining and kitchen area also have an exposed concrete ceiling. A covered balcony extends towards the shared pool area of the compound. The original marble floor was preserved, adding a touch of classic elegance. A powder room, tucked behind a glass block wall on the back balcony, features glossy, handmade dark blue tiles, a wooden counter, and a stylish sink bowl.
3rd Floor: Private Retreats
This level houses the master bedroom and a children’s bedroom, each with an ensuite bathroom. The master bedroom retains one raw concrete beam as a distinctive design feature. The master bathroom presents a striking black-and-white palette complemented by brass fixtures and a custom wooden sink cabinet. In the children’s bathroom, a playful arrangement of colorful wall tiles and a full-height glass block wall opens to a small balcony, flooding the space with natural light.
4th Floor: Hidden Heights
A remarkable discovery during demolition revealed an unused, almost 4-meter-tall roof space, allowing for the creation of a dramatic slanted ceiling.
One side of this floor is dedicated to a spa-like retreat, complete with a reading nook set within a wall opening and a freestanding red bathtub. Dark green walls and ceilings, combined with warm wooden flooring, create a cozy, immersive environment. A bold black toilet room with a red ceiling adds a striking contrast between the retreat and the library.
On the opposite side lies the library and TV room, featuring an impressive 5-meter-tall library wall in front of a glass partition overlooking the staircase. A hidden narrow stair behind the library bookshelf leads to a tucked-away attic room beneath the slanted roof, offering a secluded escape.
Ruean Thai seamlessly blends old and new, embracing both the townhouse’s historical elements and modern design innovations, resulting in a distinctive and inviting family home.
